What is SPECTRE?

SPECTRE aims to improve the efficiency of clinical trial processes. Improving how efficiently clinical trials are run means that there is potential for new treatments to be made available to patients more quickly and at lower cost.

Using an approach called Lean Six Sigma, originally used to improve manufacturing processes, we hope to find effective ways to improve clinical trial processes.

 

What have we done?

So far, we have piloted the Lean Six Sigma approach to find ways to improve the efficiency of setting up trial sites (e.g. hospitals and/or clinics where trials take place). From this work, we have:

  • Produced a Process Map (a sort of flow diagram) which shows all the tasks involved in setting up trial sites.
  • Identified the main causes of inefficiencies for some tasks in this process.
